A brief biography of Carlo Errico and the guitar he kindly donated to NWGC
It has been my life’s ambition to learn to play the classical guitar, I did start to learn in my teens but through work and other issues I was unable to pursue this path, but promised myself that I would learn one day.
For the last 35 years my hobby has been making pieces of furniture in hard wood, however when I retired I realised my ambition, to learn to play the classical guitar and also build them.
Whilst researching what materials to use, I constructed the moulds and most of the tooling myself, and I visited the local music shop to purchase a rosette, which unfortunately they did not stock but recommended me to see a local luthier, this was when I met Harry Miller, he kindly supplied a rosette free of charge!!
Harry has been making acoustic and electric guitars and other stringed instruments, plus repairs and restoration for the last 30 years, it’s 5years since I first met Harry and we have become great friends, we regularly have discussions about making guitars and what woods to use, he’s always ready to give me advice and help with any problems I couldn’t have done it without his guidance, during one of our discussions he mentioned he had some very old ash and would like to make a classical guitar with ash back and sides and cedar top, I suggested we experimented if he supplied the back and sides sound board and a mahogany neck and I would supply the rest of the materials and I would build the guitar as a joint project.
Having built and French polished the guitar, the result is a very beautiful instrument, regarding the grain and most importantly the sound, a view which is shared by many competent guitarists. I suggested that we donate it to the North Wales Guitar Circle of which I am a member, Harry was in total agreement, which just goes to show the calibre of the man.
Thank you to Carlo and Harry for their very kind gesture from all at NWGC (November 2010)
